Short answer: no, it’s usually not too late. Even in October and November, you can still book a professional DJ for a work Christmas party. Friday and Saturday nights in December book out first. Monday to Thursday nights, lunches and Sundays are much easier to get. Have your date, venue and guest numbers ready, then send an enquiry straight away. Weekend dates are going fast.

If you’ve just realised your end of year party still has no entertainment, don’t panic. This guide covers what’s still available, how quickly you can lock it in, and the mistakes that trip up late bookers.
How Booked Out Is December?
For 2026, around half of our December dates are already booked, and Friday and Saturday nights are tight. That’s normal. Most companies want the same few weekends before Christmas, and those go first every year.
What’s left is still a lot of choice. We have around 40 DJs available across December from a roster of more than 50. So the question usually isn’t whether we can find you a DJ. It’s which night and time you’re flexible on.
Which Dates Are Easiest to Book Last Minute?
If your date isn’t locked in yet, these are your best options:
- Monday to Thursday nights. These have far more availability than Fridays, and they’re often cheaper at the venue too.
- Lunchtime and afternoon parties. These are very popular with teams who want people home at a reasonable hour. They also leave DJs free for evening gigs, so they’re easier to book.
- Sundays. These suit relaxed, family-friendly or hospitality-industry celebrations.
- Late November. Starting “Christmas party season” a little early gives you the pick of dates.
The most common late enquiry we get is a Friday or Saturday night in late November or December, sent in October. Many of those can still be filled, but it’s tighter. Having a second date in mind makes a big difference.
How Much Notice Does a DJ Need?
We prefer at least 1–2 weeks for a work Christmas party. That gives us time to match the right DJ to your crowd, confirm equipment with your venue, and go through your run sheet.
But we can do last minute. A few weeks ago, a client who had first enquired with us and then booked elsewhere called four hours before their event. Their DJ had cancelled. We found a DJ and had the party running on time.
How fast we can turn a booking around depends on your requirements:
- General office party: music everyone knows works well, so we can move quickly.
- Cultural or themed party: we’ll need a bit of guidance from you on music, traditions and must-play songs so the DJ gets it right.
Can You Get a DJ at Short Notice in Your City?
At short notice, we’re most reliably able to help in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, where we have the most DJs on the roster. We also cover other major Australian cities and Bali. The more notice you give, the more options you’ll have, especially outside the main cities.
See our corporate Christmas party DJ hire page for the areas we cover.
Does Booking Last Minute Cost More?
No. There’s no last-minute surcharge. Booking late doesn’t add a fee.
What does affect price is the date itself. Peak December Fridays cost more than other nights, whenever you book. That’s one more reason a Thursday night or a long lunch can give you more for your budget.
Our standard Christmas party package starts from $900 and includes 3 hours of DJ time with all equipment included: sound, a microphone for speeches and basic lighting. Contact us for an exact quote for your date.
How to Lock In a DJ Fast

Here’s how a booking works, and how fast it can happen:
- Send your details. Date, start and finish time, venue, guest numbers and the vibe you want.
- We check availability. For last-minute events, we confirm a DJ is free first, then send your invoice.
- Pay a 50% deposit to confirm. The balance is due one week before the event.
- Share your run sheet and music preferences. Speeches, awards, must-play songs and do-not-play songs.
If you have all of this ready when you enquire, last-minute bookings can be confirmed very quickly.
Last-Minute Mistakes to Avoid
The two mistakes we see most:
1. Leaving it until the week before
Late is fine. Very late cuts your options to whoever happens to be free. Even sending an enquiry now, before your date is final, gives you a better chance of the night you want.
2. Not checking equipment rules with the venue
Before you book anything, ask your venue:
- Do they have noise limits or a music curfew?
- Is there in-house sound, or does the DJ bring everything?
- Where can the DJ set up, and how far is it from a power point?
- What are the bump-in and bump-out times, and is there lift or loading dock access?
Pass these answers to your DJ. They prevent most on-the-night surprises.
What If Every DJ Is Booked?
If your date is completely full, you still have options:
- Book an acoustic duo instead. They’re perfect for long lunches, rooftop drinks and parties with more mingling than dancing.
- Move to a nearby weeknight. Switching from Friday to Thursday often frees up our best DJs.
Add-Ons You Can Still Book Late
Want to lift the party without much extra planning? These can usually be added at short notice:
- Extra lighting to turn a function room or office into a dancefloor
- A smoke machine for atmosphere when the dancing starts
- A photo booth, a guaranteed hit with teams and great for internal comms afterwards
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it too late to book a DJ for a December Christmas party?
Usually not. Weekday nights, lunches and Sundays in December are still widely available. Friday and Saturday nights book out first, so enquire as soon as possible if you need a weekend.
What’s the minimum notice to book a Christmas party DJ?
We prefer 1–2 weeks, but we have confirmed DJs within hours when a client’s original DJ cancelled. General parties can be arranged faster than cultural or themed events.
Do last-minute DJ bookings cost more?
Not with Star DJ Hire. There’s no last-minute surcharge. Peak December Friday nights cost more than other nights regardless of when you book.
What’s included in a Christmas party DJ package?
Our standard package starts from $900 and includes 3 hours of DJ time with all equipment: sound system, microphone for speeches and basic lighting. Add-ons like extra lighting, smoke machines and photo booths are available.
How do I confirm a DJ booking quickly?
Send your date, venue, times and guest numbers. Once we confirm a DJ is available, we send an invoice, and a 50% deposit secures the booking. The balance is due one week before the event.
What if no DJs are available on my date?
Consider an acoustic duo, or move your party to a weeknight or lunchtime. These slots have much more availability in December.
